What is "te reo Māori"?

Te reo Māori, the Māori language, has seen a remarkable revival over the past fifty years, bouncing back from near extinction due to colonization. A pivotal moment came in 1972 with a petition that led to te reo Māori being recognized as an official language of New Zealand in 1987. Today, te reo Māori is not only spoken in Māori tribes, homes, and marae (tribal meeting houses) but is also widely embraced in the media and throughout Aotearoa. Whether on TV or radio, the sounds of te reo Māori are now celebrated and respected across the nation.
